PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the environment in a combustion chamber 6 with high accuracy during a discharging period. SOLUTION: From the middle compression stroke onward, the following steps (i) to (iii) are taken: (i) The advanced discharging of relatively small energy which generates and maintains a flame kernel is performed and (iii) when a predetermined time has passed after the completion of the advanced discharging, main discharging of relatively large energy which develops flames is performed. (ii) Before the start of the main discharging after the completion of the advanced discharging, an ion current is measured and, on the basis of the characteristics of the ion current, the environment in the combustion chamber before the implementation of the main discharging is detected.
