An azo compound represented by the following formula (1): (wherein A represents phenyl or naphthyl having one to three substituents such as sulfo, amino, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, etc.; B represents hydrogen, sulfo, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, etc.; R<1> to R<4> each independently represents hydrogen, halogeno, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, etc.; D represents -NHCO-, -N=N-, or -NH-; E represents hydrogen or phenyl having one to three substituents such as lower alkyl, hydroxy, amino, etc.; n is 0 or 1; and m is 0 or 1), a salt of the compound, or a copper complex compound of either. They are used for polarizers excellent in polarizing performance and durability and reduced in color leakage in the visible light region.
