PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nozzle function check mechanism of an ink jet printer performing inspection of a missing dot in a test pattern printed on the surface of a test medium. SOLUTION: On the surface of a test medium 32 fed onto a subplaten 12, a test pattern consisting of an array of a plurality of ink dots is printed with ink drops ejected from nozzles arranged on the lower surface of an ink jet head 20 using a subprint means 60. Subsequently, a light transmitting detection means 90 detects a missing dot in the test pattern printed on the surface of a test medium 32 based on the pattern recognition results from a light receiving device 70 of a light emitted from a light emitting device 80 and passing through the test media 32 discharged from the subplaten 12 while being printed with the test pattern and reaching the light receiving device.
