<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a PEG modified semiconductor fine particle which has an effectively controlled reduction in fluorescence intensity, is stably dispersed into water and is readily combined with a biomolecule having specific recognition ability, to provide a method for simply producing the same and to obtain a material for a biological diagnosis. <P>SOLUTION: The water-soluble PEG modified semiconductor fine particle has constitution that a PEG containing a thiol group on at least one terminal is combined through cadmium with microcrystal of II-VI semiconductor of core-shell structure having ZnO, ZnS, ZnSe or ZnTe shell.
