An elongate-product store (6) is formed as a piston-cylinder unit (12-13). A deflecting device (7) is piston-like and tightly fitted into the cylinder. A lower pressure is applied on the side of the deflection device opposite the direction of the resultant pulling force than on the side in the direction of the pulling force. The positions of the deflecting device are detected in predetermined steps, which are then converted into binary codes by an A/D converter (28). Once the binary codes are analyzed, they are converted to an analogue output signal (31) by a D/A converter (30) for controlling the drive of supply reel. The output signal is passed through a low pass filter (32), behind which sits a Proportional, Integral and differential (PID) controller (33).
