A handling system for palletised loads (3), or loads in rigid containers (3) has a lateral track (2) at right angles to the main transport track (1) into which loads can be diverted, or from which loads can be fed into the transport track. The loads are transferred by two parallel drive belts (2a, 2b) which reach into one side of the transport track and by a third, central drive belt (2c) which reaches further into the transport track. The belt drives are normally under the transport plane of the main track and are provided with raised lifting profiles which lift selected loads off the transport track for transfer to the lateral track. Loads are fed into the transport track by reversing the process. The raised profiles can be simple bars fitted to the drive belts. The lateral track can be sorting track or can be used for temporary storage of containers.
