An optical encoder comprises a code plate (1) arranged between a light emitting unit (4) and light receiving unit (5), which detects light having wavelengths in predetermined detection range emitted from the light emitting unit, and having a code pattern (11) formed of resin material with spectral transmittance of >= 70% for detection light and transmittance of = 50% for partial light of visible wavelengths in translucent sections.
