Water purifying apparatus and method for purifying water

An apparatus comprises several cartridges (28) affixed to one another as a filter assembly (20), several end caps (60, 62) and a removable manifold (80). The end caps having water inlet (70) and outlet (72) are connected with the first end of the cartridges. The manifold is coupled with the water inlets and outlets such that water flows through the filtering medium within the interior volume of another cartridge. The manifold includes two sections connected to form a fluid passage. Each cartridge has two ends, a side wall extending between the two ends and an interior volume adapted to receive a filtering medium. An independent claim is included for the cartridge.
