<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus by an electrophotographic process capable of suppressing the effect on sharpness by easily preventing the contamination of a photoreceptor surface by the bleeding object from an intermediate transfer belt even if the belt and the photoreceptor stop while abutting on each other and being kept as it is. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes at least the photoreceptor 1, a charging means 2, an electrostatic latent image forming means 3 for forming an electrostatic latent image on the surface of the photoreceptor 1, a developing means 4 for forming a toner image by developing the electrostatic latent image, the intermediate transfer belt 5 of an endless form partly abutting on the surface of the photoreceptor 1, a primary transfer means 6 for transferring the toner image formed on the surface of the photoreceptor 1 to the peripheral surface of the belt 5 in a transfer section A where both abut on each other, and a secondary transfer means 7 for transferring the transferred toner image on the peripheral surface of the belt 5 onto a medium 11 to be recorded in a second transfer portion different from the transfer portion A.
