Powdered laxative composition based on plantago seeds and sennoside compounds, also containing polygalactomannan to facilitate suspension in water and improve activity

A powdered composition (I), containing: (a) plantago (Plantaginis ovatae) seeds and/or their pods; and (b) anthranoid (specifically sennoside) compound(s) (preferably in the form of plant material); and additionally containing (c) one or more of polygalactomannans and their derivatives, is new. ACTIVITY : Laxative. A powder composition (A') comprising 52 wt. % plantago seeds, 2.2 wt. % plantago seed pods, 12.3 wt. % Tinnevelly senna fruit (corresponding to 0.3 wt. % sennosides), 8.3 wt. % guar gum, 0.07 wt. % finely divided silicic acid and 25.1 wt. % other components had markedly superior laxative action (no quantitative results given) to a commercially available psyllium-based composition containing no guar gum. MECHANISM OF ACTION : None given.
