PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic image pickup device and a method used for a microscope capable of obtaining a photographing image with excellent quality having no substrate unevenness. SOLUTION: The electronic image pickup device has an image pickup element provided with a photo-electric converting element which generates the electric charges corresponding to a light amount of a observation image and which is arranged two-dimensionally, a vertical transfer path for transferring the electric charges of the photo-electric converting element in the vertical direction, and a horizontal transfer path for transferring the electric charges transferred via the vertical transfer path in the horizontal direction. Discharge operation of unwanted electric charges is executed by making the driving speed of the electric charges, which are transferred in the vertical transfer path by a transfer pulse VCCD, higher than the normal speed immediately before transferring the electric charges of the photo-electric converting element as image signals to the vertical transfer path by an electric charge transfer pulse TG.
