System for channel equalization using a remodulation of an estimate of the received signal

A system and method for improving performance of a digital communication system using forward error correction and interleaving is disclosed. In the system, the channel equalization values are iteratively refined by providing a feedback of the estimated signal (180) to the channel equalizer (210). More specifically, the system comprises a means to determine at least one estimate (180) associated with a decision of a received signal corresponding to a transmitted signal (110), means to modulate (415) at least one estimate (180); and means to determine the equalization factors (450, 455) dependent upon said received signal (205) and the modulated estimate (445). The system further comprises means to iteratively determine the at least one estimate (180) for a known number of iterations (410). In one aspect the system further comprises means for combining a current one of the decisions with prior ones of said decisions in a known manner (510) in the iterative process.
