The compressor has a wheel (4) in an inlet channel (5) of a housing for compressing combustion air and a shut-off element (8) in the inlet channel variable between a shut-off position and a release position. The shut-off element is axially movable in the compressor inlet channel. An electric motor for driving the compressor wheel shaft has a stator (22) and rotor (21) that adopt their operating position when the shut-off element is in a position near compressor wheel. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) an exhaust gas turbocharger (b) and a method of operating a compressor.
