PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a compact and new scanner and an image forming apparatus. SOLUTION: The optical scanner performs optical scanning by coupling a plurality of luminous fluxes which are emitted from a light source device having four light sources by means of four coupling optical systems for each light source, causing each coupled luminous flux to be formed into an image as a line image long in a main scanning direction in the vicinity of the deflection and reflection surface of an optical deflector 2 by a first optical system, causing it deflected by the light deflector, and condensing the plurality of deflected luminous fluxes as a light spot by four sets of second optical systems on the four surfaces to be scanned. In this optical scanner, the four coupling optical systems LY-LK are in close contact with each other, with the mutual positional relation fixed. The four sets of second optical systems are each composed of a plurality of optical elements, with one closest to the light deflector commonalized with the deflected luminous flux radiating to a plurality of surfaces to be scanned, and also with a power provided primarily in the main scanning direction.
