PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal halide lamp capable of directly detecting an overcurrent flowing through an arc tube 2 to cut it off by serially connecting a fusing wire 13 to an electrode 2b of the arc tube 2. SOLUTION: This metal halide lamp 1 is equipped with the arc tube 2 sealed by adding a metal halide to mercury, and is so structured that the fusing wire 13 is serially connected to the electrode 2b of the arc tube 2 in the lamp. The threshold current Ithof the fusing wire 13 satisfies a condition of 0.02P≤Ith≤0.02P+2 when it is assumed that the rated lamp power is P(W). COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
