PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which is excellent in flatness and smoothness, electromagnetic conversion characteristics and running durability, less frequent in failure resulting from the transport of a supporting material or loss of magnetic layer and excellent in productivity. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium, in which a radiation hardened layer hardened by radiation after a radiation-hardening chemical compound being spray coated and a magnetic layer in which ferromagnetic micronized powder is distributed in a binder including polyurethane, are arranged on a nonmagnetic supporting material with this sequence, the radiation hardened layer includes 0.1-30% by weight to the total of the radiation-hardening chemical compound and the polyurethane. Between the radiation hardened layer and the magnetic layer, an intermediate layer, in which nonmagnetic powder and/or ferromagnetic micronized powder are distributed in the binder including polyurethane, can be arranged.
