The apparatus comprises a box shaped body (11) and a clamping member (13), movably supported between first and second operative positions to lock and respectively release a work piece. A linear detecting device (22, 23, 25) generates a set of control signals for a control unit, during the movement between the operative positions of the clamping arm (13). The detecting device comprises a first and a second sensor (22, 23) and indexing means in the form of a comb-shaped member (25) having spaced apart teeth (26) to sequentially activate the sensors (22, 23) and provide the set of control signals during the movement of the clamping member (13). <IMAGE>
