Production of a high purity tetraphenyl phosphonium phenolate that is in liquid form at room temperature involves reacting tetraphenyl phosphonium halide with phenol in an aqueous-alkaline solution in which the molar ratio of phenol to tetraphenyl phosphonium halide is at least 10:1 and at pH 9.5-11; and adding alcohol upon completion of reaction. Production of a high purity tetraphenyl phosphonium phenolate that is in liquid form at room temperature involves reacting tetraphenyl phosphonium halide with phenol in an aqueous-alkaline solution at 0-55degreesC, in which the molar ratio of phenol to tetraphenyl phosphonium halide is at least 10:1 and at pH values of 9.5-11; and adding alcohol upon completion of reaction to separate the aqueous phase from the organic phase. The weight ratio of aqueous reaction solution to alcohol is 2:1 to 1:2, and the solubility of the alcohol in pure water is less than 20 wt.%. An Independent claim is also included for a process of using the phosphonium phenolate, which comprises catalyzing a transesterification reaction to produce a polycarbonate resin. |
