PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To manufacture an improved optical fiber cable by surrounding a core with a protective sheath having an elastic modulus varying the core in the radial direction. SOLUTION: The core is constituted of one or more optical fibers extending in the longitudinal direction. The protective sheath is constituted of at least a primary coating layer part and a secondary coating layer part. The primary and secondary coating layer parts are made of a common coating material. A modifier is added to the coating material constituting the primary coating layer part. Similarly, a modifier is added to the coating material constituting the secondary coating layer part. The addition of the modifiers to the primary and secondary coating layer parts varies the elastic modulus of the coatings along the radius from the center of the cable core. The core is, for example, a single optical fiber, a bundle of optical fibers, a ribbon of optical fibers, a laminated type optical fiber ribbon, or the like. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
