<p>A liquid crystal device comprising a pair of substrates, a liquid crystal layer interposed between the substrates, and a pair of electrodes disposed on both sides of the liquid crystal layer and between the substrates so as to apply a voltage to the liquid crystal. An active energy beam is selectively applied to the surfaces of the substrates with no voltage applied to them, and thereafter applied to the whole surfaces of the substrates with a voltage applied to them. As a result, the liquid crystal layer has a portion where a compound polymerizable in the presence of the liquid crystal is polymerized by the selective application and a portion where the compound is polymerized by the overall application. Thus an excellent liquid crystal device having a high transmittance, a high-speed response, and a wide viewing angle is manufactured.</p> |
