PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To create or update a defect list when recording information, and to create the defect list suited for practical utilization. SOLUTION: A defect of a DVD-RAM 50 is detected by using a track error signal TE used for controlling the position of an optical pickup 52 and an RF signal before demodulation. Since the track error signal TE and the RF signal before demodulation are used to detect defects, the defect list can be created and updated even if the collation or reproduction of information is not made. Additionally, defect detection precision is improved, and only information regarding the defects for disturbing information recording practically is extracted for collecting in the defect list.
