PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To expand an adjustable range of damping force without enlarging an apparatus by increasing the number of electromagnets in a cylinder type adjustable damping force damper which can increase the resistance against the linear movement of a piston in a cylinder body by increasing the shearing stress of magnetorheological fluid contained in a fluid passage by the magnetic force generated in a magnetic circuit formed using electromagnets. SOLUTION: Two magnetic circuits 21, 22 are formed such that shearing stress S<SB>1</SB>, S<SB>2</SB>of magnetorheological fluid 2 contained in two fluid passages 7, 8 are increased respectively using one electromagnet 9 in common. In this case, the sum of the shearing stresses S1, S2 is set to be larger than the shearing stress S of the magnetorheological fluid 2 caused by one magnetic circuit formed using the electromagnet 9 as written by the following equation, (S<SB>1</SB>+S<SB>2</SB>>S).
