PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an efficient and high speed image reading operation by shortening the time required for shading correction. SOLUTION: When a four-line CCD sensor 12 simultaneously outputting a monochrome image signal and a color image signal is used, shading correction circuits 45a-45d are operated while being switched in accordance with a monochrome reading mode, a color reading mode, an auto-color select (ACS) mode or a continuous mode, and shading correction is applied to any one of or both of the monochrome image signal and the RGB color image signal.
