An optical fiber tap (100) for transferring optical energy out of an optical fiber comprising an optical fiber (102) having an annealed microbend (104) f or coupling optical energy into cladding modes, a reflecting surface (106) form ed in cladding of the fiber and positioned at an angle for reflecting by total internal reflection, cladding mode energy away from the optical fiber. For u se in an optical power monitor, the optical fiber tap is integrated into a standard electronic package containing a photodiode which converts tapped-ou t optical energy into an electrical signal representing the optical energy carried by the optical fiber.
