PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To estimate a misfire region in an adapting process of an engine control parameter. SOLUTION: A relation between the engine control parameter and an ignition delay/combustion duration and a relation between the ignition delay/combustion duration and combustion stability are modeled based on measurement data of an engine characteristic to provide a misfire estimating model, and a misfire region is estimated using the misfire estimating model. When the misfire region can be thus estimated using the misfire estimating model, measuring points are arranged only in a combustible region except for the estimated misfire region, the engine characteristic is measured, and an engine characteristic model is prepared based on the measurement data.
