PURPOSE: A method for controlling a video and sound recording/reproducing device having a lock setup function is provided to skip over video/sound files where a lock function is set, when a prestored program file is deleted and a new program file is overwritten owing to deficiency in the recording capacity of a memory device, thereby preventing an important file from being lost. CONSTITUTION: When power is applied, a main controller decides whether a lock setup request signal is received (S600). If so, the main controller displays a lock setup list screen on a TV screen(S610). If a lock setup signal for at least one program is received(S620), the main controller records lock setup information on an HDD, and updates additional information of a program file which is recorded in a root directory(S630). If a file recording request signal is received(S640), the main controller checks the capacity of a recording area remaining in the HDD(S650), and compares the remaining capacity with the recording capacity of a recording target file(S660). If the remaining capacity is smaller, the main controller decides whether a recording mode of an HDD is in an overwrite mode(S670). If so, the main controller sequentially overwrites the program file while skipping over an area where a locked program file is recorded(S690).
