Method and control device for controlling an internal combustion engine in start-stop operation

Crankshaft (42) speed (CS) is detected when an internal combustion engine (ICE) (12) is turned off. Two consecutive extremes of CS are detected for the same type. A third CS extreme following directly after the second is calculated. The ICE's potential energy anticipated in the third CS extreme is calculated. An independent claim is also included for an internal combustion engine's (ICE) control device with an engine speed sensor to detect crankshaft speed and devices to influence the ICE's potential energy when the ICE is turned off.
