Production of alpha -alumina by a two stage process comprises (Ia) elimination of water from a mixture containing water, a crystalline seed and a hydrolysate obtained by hydrolysis of an aluminum compound at a pH of 5 or less and at 60[deg]C or less; and (Ib) calcination of the powder obtained.
