PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for processing garbage that can detect the volume of the contents in a processing tank with a simple scheme without using a special sensor for detecting the volume of the contents in the processing tank. SOLUTION: The apparatus for processing garbage is equipped with the processing tank to house a carrier 2 of a microorganism to decompose garbage, a stirring means 20 to stir the contents in the processing tank 1, a heating means 3 to heat the contents in the processing tank 1, a ventilating means 44 to ventilate the processing tank 1, a moisture content sensor 5 to detect a moisture content of the contents in the processing tank 1 and a controlling means 38 to estimate the volume of the contents in the processing tank 1 based on a detected value by the moisture content sensor 5.
