PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small, less lossy, and low cost optical component having a spot size converting circuit. SOLUTION: The optical component is so constituted that a core layer 23 (core 24) nearby a connection part between a waveguide optical device 21 with a high specific refractive index difference and an optical fiber 22 with a low specific refractive index difference gradually increases (decreases) in sectional area from the optical fiber 22 toward the waveguide optical device 21. Consequently, reflection of a light signal at the connection part is reduced and a small crosstalk characteristic can be obtained. Further, the spot size converting circuit can be made small and less costly in a simple constitution wherein the sectional area and refractive index of the core layer 23 and core 24 nearby the connection part are gradually varied.
