PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rod for coating apparatus by which the occurrence of crack on a coating surface of a base material to be coated is prevented and a method of manufacturing the same. SOLUTION: A base material 112 having many grooves 118 formed by alternately forming projecting parts and recessed parts on the surface of a cylindrical member in the circumferential direction (that is the orthogonal direction to the axial direction and along the running direction of a web W) is manufactured. Next, an intermediate layer 113 is formed on the surface of the base material 112 and the surface of the intermediate layer 113 is lapped. A coating film 114 is further formed and the surface of the coating film 114 is lapped. As a result, even when the projecting parts are formed on the surface of the intermediate layer 113, the projecting parts are removed by the lapping of the surface of the intermediate layer 113. Then, it is prevented with a simple treatment that the effect on the projecting part of the intermediate layer 113 appears on the coating film 114 and the crack due to the projecting parts occurs on the coating surface of the web W.
