PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing carbon fiber of high quality from acrylic fiber tow by pulling up the tow vertically from a tow containing can in no occurrence of bending, folding, twisting and uneven thickness of the tow without causing filament breakage and fluffing . SOLUTION: An acrylic fiber tow 3 contained in a tow container 1 under traversing is pulled up vertically and calcined to produce carbon fiber. In this case, the tow is pulled up vertically so that the traverse width X and the tow-vertically pulling up height Y may satisfy: 2X≤Y≤10X, where X is the traverse width and Y is the pulling-up height, and the pulled-up tow is brought into contact with the tow trimming guide to perform the tow trimming.
