PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress deterioration of gray scale reproducibility of a half tone in a display device using a liquid crystal display element. SOLUTION: In a liquid crystal display device equipped with an ADC 1, a scaling conversion circuit 2, a digitalγcorrection circuit 3, a DAC 4, a brightness/contrast control circuit 5, a sample hold circuit 6, the liquid crystal display element 7, a black extension signal forming circuit 8 and a signal selector 9, the liquid crystal display device is characterized by selecting a signal from the brightness/contrast control circuit 5 or from the black extension signal creation circuit 8 based on a switching control signal from the scaling conversion circuit 2 or from the digitalγcorrection circuit 3, outputting it to the sample hold circuit 6 and subjecting an analog image signal to black extension after being outputted from the digitalγcorrection circuit.
