PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a green light emitting phosphor which efficiently absorbs light, shows short afterglow, and emits green light when ultraviolet light (254 nm) of a mercury bright line is used as an excitation source; and a fluorescent lamp with a short response time. SOLUTION: The green light emitting phosphor at least contains calcium, yttrium, aluminum, and oxygen, contains terbium as an activator at the emission center, and has a composition expressed by the formula: CaY<SB>1-x</SB>Tb<SB>x</SB>AlO<SB>4</SB>(wherein 0.005≤x≤0.5). The green light emitting phosphor in which a part of composition element Y has been substituted by Gd and/or La and which has a composition expressed by the general formula: CaY<SB>1-x-y</SB>Tb<SB>x</SB>Re<SB>y</SB>AlO<SB>4</SB>(wherein Re is Gd and/or La; 0.005≤x≤0.5; and 0.1≤y≤0.7) shows shorter afterglow and higher emission intensity under mercury excitation. The green light emitting phosphor in which all the Y has been substituted by Gd and/or La and which has a composition expressed by the general formula: CaGd<SB>(1-x-y)</SB>La<SB>y</SB>Tb<SB>x</SB>AlO<SB>4</SB>(wherein 0.005≤x≤0.5; and 0≤y≤1-x) also shows short afterglow and high emission intensity under mercury excitation.
