The invention concerns a surgical instrument for use in hernia repairs. In order to aid the ligation and extirpation of the hernia sac the instrument is comprised of an elongated profiled element having a handle part (4, 5) for gripping and handling of the instrument during surgical use and a first tissue engaging part (3) provided with a slit (6) in which the sac of the hernia can be received.
