PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of conducting a descreening process at a high accuracy. SOLUTION: The dot position and a unit dot region are specified at an output resolution level from the angle dependence of a distribution obtained by counting dot pixels forming dots in one direction. The edges of the dot are extracted and counted in one direction to detect the position of a deformed dot located at the boundary between patterns different in gradation value at an output resolution level, thereby specifying the position of a pattern pixel at a high accuracy. This realizes a high-accuracy separation of character/line image regions from pattern image regions.
