<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer having a sharpness measuring function in which quantitative quality control (QC) of sharpness can be carried out easily at an installation site. <P>SOLUTION: The printer capable of recording a two-dimensional image on a recording medium comprises a means generating a test pattern for measuring the sharpness, an illumination system for illuminating a recording image being outputted, a two-dimensional photosensor arranged in matrix, an optical system for focusing the recording image on the two-dimensional photosensor, a means for measuring the image focused on the two-dimensional photosensor, and a means for outputting measurements from the measuring means.
