The invention relates to a device which is used to protect steering travel limit stops, such as to prolong the lifespan thereof. The inventive device processes signals representative of the absolute position (A) of the steering wheel (2), the rotational speed of the steering wheel (2) and the torque (C) corresponding to the force exerted on said steering wheel (2) by the driver. According to the invention, the total torque of force authorised on the steering system is determined taking account of the force exerted on the steering wheel and the power assist force, such as to limit said force as the steering travel limit positions draw near, in particular in the event of the rapid rotation of the steering wheel (2). Said device can be used in motor vehicles comprising an electrical power steering system which is controlled by a computer (10) which receives signals from various sensors (11, 12, 13). |
