GAIN-CLAMPED SEMICONDUCTOR OPTICAL AMPLIFIER

摘要

PURPOSE: A gain-clamped semiconductor optical amplifier is provided to obtain a stable laser with one gain waveguide without constituting a gain waveguide and a passive waveguide additionally. CONSTITUTION: The gain-clamped semiconductor optical amplifier includes a gain waveguide(41), and a clad layer(43) surrounding the gain waveguide, and a grating layer(42) formed below the gain waveguide. The grating layer is formed only on a part of both edges of an input part and an output part. The grating layer is formed asymmetrically to have different refractive indices on the input part and the output part. The gain waveguide further includes a mode conversion area(45) formed on the part of both edges of the gain waveguide to improve optical coupling efficiency with an optical fiber.
