PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To lessen a variation in stop position of engine rotation. SOLUTION: Immediately before the engine rotation stops, an ISC valve is fully opened to increase the amount of suction air, thereby increasing the compression pressure at a compression stroke. In accordance with the increase of the compression pressure, the negative rotation torque at the compression stroke increases, and acts as force to impede rotation of the engine. Thus, brakes are applied to the engine rotation and a crank angle range where the rotation torque becomes below the engine friction (a crank angle range where the engine rotation can be stopped) is made narrower than the prior art. As a result, the variation in stop position of the engine rotation falls within a crank angle range narrower than the prior art. If information as to the engine rotation stop position is stored in a backup RAM, at the time of starting the engine, an initial ignition cylinder and injection cylinder are judged precisely so as to start the engine, using the information as to the engine rotation stop position (the initial position of a crankshaft at the time of starting the engine) stored in the backup RAM.
