[Class 55 (i)] [Also in Group XIII] In apparatus for the carbonization of coal, porcelain spheres or other inert particulate solids flow from a pipe 1 through a vessel 2 in which they are heated by hot combustion gases from a combustion chamber 15, and afterwards divided into two streams which flow through the vessels 6, 7 and rejoin to return to the pipe 1. Air flowing through the vessel 6 is heated and oxidizes carbonaceous material deposited on the porcelain spheres, and then passes to the combustion chamber 15. Carbonization gases from a carbonization vessel 18, after passing if desired through a hydraulic main 21 and cleaning device 22, are heated in the vessel 7 and return to the vessel 18 through the pipe 17. They may be drawn off through a pipe 23. Coal fed through the pipe 19 is maintained as a fluid bed in the vessel 18 by the carbonization gas from the pipe 17, and is heated by part of the hot carbonaceous material from the combustion chamber 15, another part being fed to a water gas producer in which it is fluidized by steam. Carbonaceous material leaving through the pipe 24 may be partially consumed in a water-gas producer and then introduced through the pipe 25 to the combustion chamber 15.
