PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new macroazo compound having a polyolefin chain in the molecule, and a method for preparing the macroazo compound by imparting a functional group to a polyolefin polymer, and then reacting a low molecular weight azo compound with the obtained polyolefin polymer. SOLUTION: The polyolefin chain-containing macroazo compound is represented by formula (I) [wherein R<SP>1</SP>to R<SP>4</SP>are each a lower alkyl group or a cyano group; X and X' are each a lower alkylene group; W and W' are each a bonding group selected from an ester group, an amide group, and an ether group; and P and P' are each a polymer chain obtained by homopolymerizing or copolymerizing an olefin represented by the formula: CH<SB>2</SB>=CHR<SP>5</SP>(wherein R<SP>5</SP>is a group or an atom selected from a 1-20C carbon group, hydrogen, and a halogen)].
