PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a toroidal continuously variable transmission having long service life and capable of suppressing surface start point peeling and suppressing peeling caused by change of structure. SOLUTION: This toroidal continuously variable transmission is provided with an input disc 5 and an output disc 6b having a recessed curved raceway surface on a side face and a roller 7 arranged in a toroidal clearance between both raceway surfaces 5b and 6c and coming into contact under the presence of lubricating oil. Residual compression stress on at least an outermost surface on one side among the raceway surfaces 5b, 6c of the input and output discs 5, 6b and an outer peripheral face 7b of the roller 7 is set to 600 MPa or less. Lubricating oil containing wear prevention agent such as dialkyldithiolin acid zinc is used as lubricating oil existent among the input and output discs 5, 6b and the roller 7.
