PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an oxidation-reduction reaction between an electrode and an alignment layer caused by incident light, to improve resistance properties of a substrate and to suppress deterioration of the substrate. SOLUTION: The substrate for a liquid crystal device is equipped with: a pixel electrode 9a formed in accordance with pixels arranged on a first transparent substrate 10 in a matrix form; a passivation film 81 formed on the first transparent substrate 10 including the pixel electrode 9a and on a region except for a region where a joining material 41 with a second transparent substrate 20 placed opposite to the first transparent substrate 10 is formed for the purpose of sealing a liquid crystal; and an alignment layer 16 formed on the pixel electrode 9a via the passivation film 81.
