PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle steering unit for a vehicle capable of securing a sufficient evacuation quantity when a steering wheel is automatically evacuated forward of a driver in collision. SOLUTION: The vehicle steering unit for the vehicle in which the steering wheel is connected to a turning rod to turn front wheels by a flexible transmission means comprises a link having a supporting point turnable in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle on a left forward portion of a driver's seat with a part of the steering wheel and the flexible transmission means mounted thereon, an elastic body operated in the evacuating direction in the link, and a holding means which suppresses the force of the elastic body except in collision and releases the holding in collision, and further comprises a steering wheel evacuation mechanism in which the steering wheel is instantaneously evacuated in the direction (the evacuating direction) different from the direction in which a head of a driver is moved in collision.
