PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an upward stream filtration method and an apparatus for filtering an original liquid to be filtered by causing the original liquid to flow in a filter media particle layer from below and flow upward through the filter media particle layer, the method and apparatus for performing upward stream filtration at a lower cost while more uniformly and simply cleaning the filter media particle than the conventional upward stream filtration method and apparatus. SOLUTION: In the upward stream filtration method and the apparatus for filtering the original liquid L' to be filtered by causing the original liquid to flow in a filtration vessel 1 incorporating the filter media particle layer 40 from below and flow upward through the filter media particle layer 40, high speed upward stream of the flowing original liquid L' is caused in the lower part of the filtration vessel 1 and the original liquid L' is caused to flow upward through the filter media particle layer 40 to be filtered while cleaning the filter media particles 4 in the lower part of the filtration vessel 1 by the high speed upward stream, and a part of the original liquid L' is discharged together with contaminants removed from the filter media particles 4 by the cleaning from the lower part of the filtration vessel 1. The cleaned filter media particles 4 are returned to the filter media particle layer 40 through a rinse passage 5, while being rinsed with a rinsing liquid (after filtration liquid L).
