PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for evaluating signal quality, which gives an index for evaluating the quality of a signal recorded on an optical disk medium, etc., having high recording density so as to make jitter measurement difficult and its reference value, and uses the index and the reference value. SOLUTION: In order to evaluate the quality of a signal recorded on an optical recording medium, etc., a target signal is obtained based on a predetermined data string and a predetermined partial response characteristic, and for each clock cycle, an equalization error is calculated that is a difference between the target signal and a signal reproduced for each clock cycle. Further, the product of the equalization errors calculated at different times is obtained, and based on the product of the equalization errors, the quality of a signal is evaluated.
