Alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons are isomerized and/or disproportionated in the liquid phase at less than 600‹ F. in the presence of a crystalline aluminosilicate catalyst having a sodium content of less than 4% by wt. The feedstock may comprise mono- or polyalkyl benzenes or alkylnaphthalenes. The catalyst may include cations of the metals Ca, Mg, Mn, Cr, Al, Zr, V, Ni, Co, Fe, and/or rare earth metals and non- metallic cations H+, NH4+, N(Me) 4 + and N(Et) 4 +. Examples describe the isomerization of o-xylene to give mainly m and p-xylenes and the disproportionation of toluene to give benzene and xylenes. |
