A procedure for determining the maximum of measured values in which at least one measurement point (1) joined by data-line (3) receives a data value (R) serially on the data-line and compares it with the particular measured value (D) which is only sent serially on the data-line (3) if it is smaller than the measured data value (R). The measurement point (1) receives only the data value (R) bits of degressive significance in the sequence and the received bits of the data values (R) with the same significant bits of the particular measured value (D) are at least compared and each sends each received bit recognized as larger than the corresponding received bit for so long until a comparison results with the bit of the particular measured value smaller than the received data value, and then adjusts sending of the particular data value. An Independent claim is included for a device for ascertaining the maximum from a number of measured values.
