<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low cost planar light source which can uniformly radiate even in a large sized display panel such as an illuminated billboard while achieving saving of energy by effectively utilizing the beam from the light source. <P>SOLUTION: A plurality pieces of the planar light source units 10 (11, 12 and so on) are provided consisting of a point-like or a linear light source 1 and a light conducting plate 2 having the beam from the light source 1 make incidence from a side surface 2a and radiating almost uniformly from one planar surface 2c. The light source 1 of one piece of the planar light source unit 12 is installed in parallel to be overlapping on a lower side of an end 2b facing the side surface 2a in which the light source 1 in the light conducting plate 2 of the other planar light source unit 11.
